On The Plot Bunny

First of all, you may be asking yourself, "What is a plot bunny?"

A plot bunny is a small creature of the mind spontaneously generated when a person thinks, "Wouldn't X make a wonderful book/movie/cartoon/comic?" X is a plot bunny.

Much of the time, these creatures are short lived and swiftly forgotten when we move on to some other new interesting thing passing our way. But some of them are not. Instead, they stick around the remote corners of our minds to occasionally return, bounce around for a little while and depart back into our subconscious.

Sometimes our conscious mind makes the mistake of catching these wild plot bunnies and playing with them for a little while. Plot bunnies, when active, LOVE attention. Nothing makes them happier than to be petted, fussed over and refined. Thus the plot bunny is easily tamed, whereon it develops a personality.

Common are the enthusiastic plot bunnies, who constantly chatter, "Wouldn't it be great if..." While such plot bunnies are good to keep the conscious mind entertained for short periods of time, These plot bunnies need to be bred with the more patient varieties of plot bunny to obtain a viable story. Also, enthusiastic plot bunnies need to be periodically bred into longer lasting plot bunny strains in order to keep the creator interested in completing their project.

Also common are what I term blitz bunnies. They come, they bite the creative mind hard enough to produce something short and hopefully entertaining and then they disappear into the ether. Many short ficlets, single shot comics and short films are results of this kind of plot bunny.

Blitz bunnies and enthusiastic bunnies are the primary strains of the spieces. Most of the other varieties come about by carefully breeding these two strains together. Unfortunately, exact breeding trees are unique to the conscious in which the plot bunnies reside and fall under the category of "trade secret"image

A few varieties I have encountered thus far:
A sweet tempered plot bunny that waits patiently for an invitation to be petted and played with.
A long lived, hyper agressive strain that clamps down and gnaws on one's rear until the project is finished
A very durable, long lived variety that comes, plays for a while then disappears only to return at some later date and disappear again.

A little about me

I suppose I ought to use the space since it is here.

I am a person who enjoys reading and writing a good deal. I do not think I would want to do either to earn my bread and butter, but I think they are fine hobbies for me. I write fanfiction (yes, I know, I'm a freak, get over it) and I enjoy filling in the blanks for secondary and lesser known characters in my favorite fandom, rather than main canon characters. Of course, that's when I'm not writing my original characters' misadventures. I like to think that I'm getting better at this whole storytelling thing with practice. The one thing that I hear a lot from reviewers is how real my characters seem. This makes me happy that I'm doing something consistently rightimage

Now if only I could do the same thing for my plots...

Part and parcel with the writing habit I've been feeding for years, I also like to leave reviews for other writers. Sometimes I leave short ones, but I've noticed that I've been leaving longer and longer reviews recently. As such, they tend to be very nitpicky and sometimes very, very harsh. I am of the opinion that sugarcoating a review denatures any critiisms in it, so I do come off as a not very nice person when I do it. But for anyone who rushed to my profile to send me a line about what a horrible person I am, consider the following...

-If I found something I liked at all, even if it was only one line, I will mention it. I read things thoroughly multiple times when I shred them.

-I don't think of bad writers as horrible people. An ill considered response to a review might change my mind though. I try to keep my opinion of the person separate from a review, any writer I critique should do the same.

-I am a daisy compared to a professional editor. If you want to publish and I just shredded whatever you wrote, be glad it happened before you submitted anything.

Nonsense I've put forth
